ANI230: Progress Journal Week 7

Hey everyone. Here is my 7th transmission of my Progress Journals. I didn’t record the time spent on final project, because it was simply easier that pulling out my calculator each week. Week 7 had 35 hours recorded down.

Toggl Week 7

Usually I’d start this post with World Builder progress, but as it was just compling the video, finding music, exporting video, fixing video and exporting again (rinse and repeat) I have decided not to show any image progress here. The post-mortem for World Builder will be uploaded soon anyway, so you will be able to read that. World Builder is now finished (discounting the coming post-mortem). So from here on out these progress reports will be all about Specialisation Project and my body of work.

I started doing research on my specialisation project in week 7, looking at genicecream’s composition tips image on DeviantArt as a starting point. From this image full of tips I started a rough image beginning with layout.

Composition Test layout

It’s meant to be a huge rock in a clearing. The kind of rock that children would climb. And for certain it looks far better than having the rock directly in the center.

In my body of work, I added a new image. It is an image for the AU Creation Contest on the Undertale AUs Amino, which is due December 1st. This contest requires me to draw two characters (based off Toby Fox’s Undertale characters, so no original characters) from an alternative universe that I created. So I chose my Project: UNDERGROUND AU, selecting the characters Chara and Frisk for my image. And I added Mettaton with them, because it would have been odd not to, considering my AU.

Base Colours

Only flat colours at the moment, but that’s okay. And the lines on Frisk and Mettaton’s arms haven’t been added yet. This image started off as this rough sketch here:

Sketch.png

Wierd eyes. I was planning a background, however, I am currently of the opinion that the image looks better without it.

That’s all I have for week 7. See you all in the next blog post!

ANI230: Progress Journal Week 5

Hello dear readers! Page 5 of my progress journal is now written. For week 5 I recorded another 27 and a half hours for Studio 3 projects and my body of work.

Toggl Week 5

Week 5 was mostly working on World Builder, and completing assets for it. I managed to complete both horses, Aravis (in front) and Lasaraleen (on litter). As well as add general decorations around the street.

Asset Progress

Doesn’t it look far better than last week? From feedback I received, I changed Lasaraleen’s dress from purple to blue, and changed her pink curtains to a rich purple, and I decided that since everyone was calling her a princess I would give her a tiara.

Shasta (blonde boy) and the general crowd still need to be fixed, as do Lasaraleen’s slaves. They will be done for my next update.

After World Builder is my specialisation project. I haven’t done much, just the Project Initiation report here. I talk about background art in it, so go read it if you haven’t already.

And finally, for my body of work. I was bitten by an inspiration bug while playing Bendy and the Ink Machine and I just couldn’t ignore it. So I started sketching out a Bendy push onto a Photoshop document.

BATIM Left Alone SKETCH

I’m almost entirerly sure that this is going to be the largest drawn image I have made in Photoshop, being twice the size of my usual documents, so I have a lot of room to play with details once I get there.

That concludes this blog, I can’t wait to write my next blog. Until then!

Character Creation: Research

I need a character for a story I’m writing, but I haven’t been the greatest at character creation, I’ve just made vague descriptions, never really ironing out details and making it up as I go along. This isn’t a very efficient way of designing characters. So, some research is needed to improve my skill, and, as conscequence, improve my characters.

IllidanA most of the sources I have looked at tell me one thing consistently: make your characters unique. In the words of Andra who wrote ‘10 Quick Tips to Help You Design Characters Like a Pro‘, “ideally, you should design your character so you can recognize them even if they were naked and bald.” Hmm… lets apply this to my Original Character that I am using in a fanfiction at the moment. Lythia Balfour is blonde, wears a military uniform similar to the character Jade Curtiss, has violet eyes, and is technically blind. Not that unique, I haven’t ever mentioned her having scars of any kind, though being in the military she is bound to have some. I haven’t even drawn her once. Okay, well lets compare Lythia to another character, already designed, completely unrelated; Illidan Stormrage from World of Warcraft. No need to look far, I have him as this paragraph’s image. Lets see, discounting purple skin, since that is a Night Elf trait, he has black hair, unique to him (for his race), his tattoos are unique to him. Horns, wings that are always present? Definitely unique. A tad less unique since the release of World of Warcraft: Legion, but the edition of Demon Hunters into the game, hasn’t subtracted much from the unique appearance of Illidan, as the character customization screen doesn’t allow customization that looks like Illidan (really, any unique character is impossible to replicate without mods).

linaren_darkshard_by_frostieheart-d9n643qAnother tip that I have read consistently? Colour. Choose your colours wisely. Colour is important for characters, you want to use the right colours, and you don’t want to use too many colours. “Typically, dark colours such as black, purples and greys depict baddies with malevolent intentions. Light colours such as white, blues, pinks and yellows express innocence, good and purity. Comic-book reds, yellows and blues might go some way to giving hero qualities to a character design,” as stated in the article ‘20 top character design tips‘ written by the staff of Creative Bloq. Seems easy right? Well, not really, lets look at another one of my characters; Linaren Darkshard. (This paragraph’s image). As can be seen, she is exhibiting colours that are highly saturated and clash as a consequence of this. While I acknowledge that I created Linaren for a high school surrealism art assignment, I can’t do much more with her than that, and that somewhat bugs me. I might end up redesigning Linaren eventually.

One particular article shared dos and don’ts for character creation. The one ‘don’t’ that I noted the most was “Inconsistency in your characters will jar your readers mightily.” Well… to the guys at Reader’s Digest…. I humbly apologise. I have noted inconsistencies in many of my characters, no matter how much I avoid them. I have failed you all. The main inconsistency… in my OC Lythia. Recently in her story, I revealed that she is blind, but I didn’t really explain how she could see very well. The explanation was flakey and I’m sorry to admit that I am probably never going to fix that. HOWEVER! I will take note of this fact for future reference. Planning is important. I should probably learn to stop writing half baked ideas and fully flesh them out before beginning my plan ((But… It works with drawing!! Why can’t I do the same for writing??”)).

So with all these tips, written here, and unmentioned, but on the articles, what should I do?

Well, lets start simple, outline what kind of character I’m looking for:

  • Female
  • Dancer or Musician
  • Traveller

Okay, so with that, I can start designing. So I should ask myself these questions:

  • Who is she?
  • What’s her story?
  • What’s ethnicity does she belong to?
  • What colours does she wear the most?
  • What style of clothing does she like wearing?
  • What’s her name?
  • Personality?
  • What are her goals?

And with that, I can start drawing ideas. Perhaps I’ll end up with a pink skinned alien girl wearing a lime green tutu. Hehehe, as fun as that sounds, I suppose we shall see. It’s been a long week. See you all next time~

Animation Bachelor Update + New Projects

Okay, so I’ve been wondering for a while how to post this, which do I talk about first? My animation degree or a new personal project I’m planning (and have started). Well I decided to start with my degree.

So hello everyone!

First off: my Bachelor in Animation. I am now in my fourth trimester and I have two classes, one of which is my first Production unit. I am required to post progress updates of all projects I do in this module on my blog, so you will be seeing some more of that soon. Another thing I am meant to do for this class is refining and developing my own skills, so I’m going do be working on my drawing skills, such as anatomy and character development. Leading of from this, I now have an excuse to continue a 100 theme challenge I started a while back where I restricted myself to one of my OC’s as to develop her character. So that’s what’s happening this trimester.

Now onto my own project, somewhat unrelated, but still somewhat relevant to my degree. I had this idea a few weeks ago to make a Hunger Games and Tales of Series crossover. So I did it basically. I used a Hunger Games generator to reap selected characters from the Tales of Series and then I just generated the events that happened and screencapped them.

Here is my reaping:
tales-of-hunger-games-reaping

First I’ll be drawing just an image with all my tributes. Personally; I’m rooting for District 1 or 6 here. I will post the arena events when I get up to drawing them. Here is the progress of my first image:
the-tributes-wip

To link you to their wiki pages, from left to right we have: Giselle Oslo, Jade Curtis, Zelos Wilder, Raine Sage, Rita Mordio, Yuri Lowell, Alfred Svent, Elize Lutus, Fylk Zadeya, Alisha Diphda, Uphim Welkps, Velvet Crowe, Leon Magnus, Ilene Remembrant, Reid Hershel, Farah Oersted, Cress Albane, Arche Klein, Saleh, Claire Bennett, Emil Castagnier, Marta Lualdi, Asbel Lhant and Pascal.

In future blog posts I will be using the names that are most said in-game, not their full names (or in the case of Seraphim/Malakim, true names). Comment below to tell me who your hoping to win.

That’s all I have for now, I will post again soon when I have more of the image above complete. See you all soon!

Reflective Task – Review of Independent Media

The last task for my blog posts in CIU110 is to review a piece of independent media. I chose to review the work-in-progress game “Yandere Simulator” by YandereDev.

yandere sim logo

Before I get into this review I must point out that the game ‘Yandere Simulator’ is in no way complete, as its creator YandereDev continuously points out, what is currently available is a debug sandbox build to allow people to test out the features of this game and report back problems. There is no way to win this game at present.

yandere sim

Yandere-chan

‘Yandere Simulator’ is a work-in-progress game based around the idea of the Japanese character trait of Yandere, who is generally a female character who obsessively loves someone, enough to kill. These characters are deranged and mentally unstable. The main character of Yandere Simulator, currently known as Yandere-chan, or Ayano Aishi, is such a character. She is obsessed with the character who is her Senpai, currently called Taro Yamada. The game revolves around the world of Yandere-chan as the player controls her, trying to win Senpai’s affections by keeping away his other potential girlfriends, who are Yandere-chan’s rivals. YandereDev has stated that the finished game will take place over a time period of ten weeks, with each week having a new rival for Yandere-chan to eliminate. Should the player fail to eliminate the rival before the Friday of the week they appear, the rival will confess their love to Senpai and the game will be over. The ways of eliminating the rival will eventually range from murder to a much more peaceful matchmaking.

All up, the idea for this game is great. It has its complexities and makes the game have an interesting feel. The idea for a stealth game based in a high school is amazing, it is on par with other steath games, such as Assassins Creed or Hitman. The high school setting makes it very unique, and potentially harder, as the player will be trying to avoid the detection of teachers, students, and most importantly; Senpai. Should you be discovered by any of the aforementioned characters, committing murder, covered in blood, carrying a weapon or visibly insane, you will suffer consequences that more often than not, result in Yandere-chan becoming heartbroken because Senpai noticed her, or apprehended because she was caught, causing Game Over.

Osana Najimi – Planned first rival of the game

The animation in this game so far is smooth and, even though incomplete, fits every action that Yandere-chan is doing. While there are quite obviously many animations missing from the game, what is there already starts to tie the game together.

This game is about being a teenage school girl, stalking her upperclassman trying to sabotage his love life from the shadows to become his girlfriend. YandereDev has stated many times that the whole game will be affected by your decisions. It is not meant to be an easy game, as YandereDev said, it should be very hard to get away with murder, and that is what makes this game interesting.

All up this game has some very good ideas that, if developed properly, will turn into an amazing finished product. YandereDev is doing a good job working on this game, and there it is certain that he will release more great updates for the sandbox build of this game for players to test for bugs.

Blog Task – Future Predictions for Media

Recently, I went to the cinema to watch ‘Warcraft: The Beginning’ with my mum. While there we noticed how many empty seats there were. This made me wonder, how often are movie theatres almost empty these days? How often does is the theatre empty when a movie is shown? While the next logical question from there would be; does the theatre even play the movie if there is no one there to watch it, that is not important. What the important thing is this; I predict that the popularity of cinema is falling.

Warcraft movie poster

Why do I say this? Well for first things,  movies from smaller producers aren’t as well advertised anymore. I saw no trailers for the Warcraft movie unless I went searching for them. I’ve seen plenty of ads on YouTube that are trailers for Marvel movies and movies from other big studios like Dreamworks, but nothing for Warcraft. Around websites with third-party advertisement, I only once did I see an ad that was for Warcraft. I love the game World of Warcraft, and I love trying to find out everything about the game I can, but I can say that I didn’t know that this movie even existed before my mother showed me the trailer that she had managed to find. With a monopoly on advertisment, smaller studios don’t get as much publication.

Angry Birds movie posterThis brings me to my next point; the length of time some movies stay in cinemas for and how often screening are. The Angry Birds movie is only shown in Event Cinemas in Australia  at around 9:30am each morning, and not showing at all in some cinemas.  This makes getting to movies hard, since with only one screening a day, while might encourage fuller cinemas, doesn’t give people many options to work with. Traffic issues can cause people to be late for screenings, and can also discourage people from wanting to watch movies at the cinema.

Another point I would like to bring up is Netflix. Netflix has its own original programming which has started adding movies to its lists. These movies don’t get released in cinema, therefore subtracting from the appeal of going to the cinema to watch movies. While not movies like Marvel or DC cinematic universes or Star Wars, it can only be assumed that eventually those aforementioned movies, or movies like them, will eventually become available on Netflix  or other web streaming providers. Why would someone go to the cinemas when they can just stream the movie at home?

Piracy_Its_A_Crime_WideAnd this brings me to my final point; piracy.  Downloading illegal copies of a movie for free.  Why waste money going to the cinemas to view something you can get for free later once it has been placed on a piracy website?  A sad but true that is that, yes, people do breach copyright laws just to save some money and watch their favourite movies. It’s a crime, (as the picture states) but some people don’t care. And it’s piracy that is killing the popularity of cinemas the most.

With all these pain made, I wish to reiterate what I stated before; I predict that in the near future, the popularity of cinemas will die. The price of watching movies at the cinema will increase and further discourage people from going, and the theatre’s seats will be emptier. It is strange to see the popularity of cinema fall after growing up around people always talking about when they will next go to see a movie. Not many people have conversation like that anymore, only talking about what the newest model of smartphone is or what the latest game releases are.  But this is the way that cinema popularity is falling. Perhaps in fifteen years its popularity will rise again.

Assignment: Visual Timeline

Animation has brought forth many characters that have touched the hearts of fans, and last year the character of Otosaka Ayumi from the anime ‘Charlotte’. This timeline seeks to outline the potential inspiration that helped create Ayumi.

Otosaka Ayumi (2015)

1 Otosaka Ayumi

Ayumi is the cheerful, supportive younger sister of Otosaka Yuu. She can be annoying at times but she always means well, her annoying tendencies springing from her excitable personality, such as leaving annoying messages on her brother’s bento, making her a cute character that is impossible to hate.

1 Otosaka Ayumi casual

She has huge expressive eyes that shine with happiness. Her long hair is always flowing behind her as she excitedly bounces and runs around. Ayumi only has four outfits seen in ‘Charlotte’, her school uniform, casual clothes, winter clothes and her pyjamas, and all these outfits are some form of a red, orange or yellow colour palette (discounting the uniform, which only has the red bow.) These colours are vibrant and reflect her happy personality.

Ayase Alisa (2013)

2 Ayase Alisa

Ayase Alisa is from the anime ‘LoveLive! School Idol Project’. She is very much like Ayumi, sharing an interest in music, and loving her older sibling.

Like Ayumi, Alisa is the cheerful, supportive younger sister of Ayase Eli. Alisa’s supportiveness is shown through her willingness to voice her opinion, without fear of people shooting her down. Her character design is also cute in appearance, and helps with her personality when she makes adorable mistakes while trying to help her older sister.

Alisa wears a lot of white clothes, occasionally wearing black or dark blue, reflecting her innocent nature. Most of the time its her uniform, in a simple sailor outfit style. Also in likeness to Ayumi, she has the same expressive eyes and, though shorter, free flowing hair. While she might not bounce around like Ayumi all of the time, she is no less cute.

Dojima Nanako (2008)

3 Dojima Nanako

From the game ‘Persona 4’, Dojima Nanako is the younger cousin of the protagonist.

Nanako is shy when she first meets the protagonist, but very quickly shows that she cares for him, and wants to help her older cousin, and while she may be more mature than Ayumi and Alisa, Nanako still shows the childish innocence that both of the aforementioned characters have, calling the protagonist and his friends her “big brothers” and “big sisters”.

She wears a lot of pink and white throughout the game. The white showing her innocence, like Alisa, and the pink representing her cheerfulness, like Ayumi. She still has the same expressive eyes as the previous two characters, but her hair is different, being tied into two ponytails on either side of her head, instead of flowing free, giving her a slightly more childish look.

Aryll (2002)

4 AryllIn the ‘Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker’, Aryll, like Nanako, is a mature and helpful character. Aryll is the Hero’s little sister, and she tries to assist her brother and grandmother in any way she can, lending the Hero her telescope for his birthday. Ayrll is also compassionate, shown when she asks the Hero to help Tetra, whom she has seen being dropped by a giant bird.  She also loves playing with seagulls, showing an affinity for animals.

The simpleness of Aryll’s dress, like Nanako’s, shows off the childish innocence of the character. Her eyes are less expressive, stemming from the lack of colour to them, but they still show the excited nature of Aryll through angles. Her hair is the exact same style as Nanako’s, also adding to the childishness of the character.

Lucy Pevensie (1950)

4 Lucy PevensieAs the youngest of the Pevensie children, Lucy is often disregarded by her older siblings, as seen when she insists that the Wardrobe leads to Narnia, and several other times during the series. She is compassionate and willing to help everyone, when she want to help Mr Tumnus the Faun. She is also brave, adventurous and very curious.

In ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’, the first time we meet Lucy in ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’, she wears simple dresses, common to young girls during the time the story is set, 1940, World War II. Her hair, once again, is like Aryll and Nanako’s, in twin tails on either side of her head.

Alice (1865)

5 AliceAlice, like Lucy, falls into a magical world which she then explores. In Wonderland, Alice displays her curiosity and courage as she traverses, meeting many strange and weird characters like the Cheshire Cat and the Queen of Hearts. Alice is also somewhat helpful, in her (sort of) assisting the Duchess look after the baby which turns into a pig. Alice tries hard to be polite, but seems to fail to take into consideration others feelings.

The original Alice, drawn by John Tenniel, has free flowing hair like Ayumi and Alisa, and a simple dress like Lucy. The style fits in with the style of the time period.

LineBreak002

From Alice to Ayumi a clear archetype is formed, as the supportive younger sibling. It shows the character in a cute and encouraging fashion. These characters can’t be hated, and can cause much change to the emotional atmosphere of the world around them.
